Set up a test meeting
It is useful to have a test meeting in order to test the microphone, speakers and/or camera of your device. You do not have to do a test meeting, but it will give you some time to practise using the platform. If you would like to skip this step, press the button below to go to the next section: "Set up a Zoom meeting".
Here is how to set up a test meeting:
-
STEP 1: Open your Internet browser and go to zoom.us/test. Click on the blue button that says "Join". You will be automatically redirected to the Zoom app, or if you do not have the Zoom app installed yet, the link will open directly in your web browser.
-
STEP 2: You will see a video preview screen, where you can check how the other participants will see you. By default you will see this window every time you join a Zoom meeting; if you want to skip this step in the future, untick the box "Always show video preview dialog when joining a video meeting"
-
Below you have the options to "Join with video" to join with your camera on (blue button) or "Join without video" - click on the preferred option. For this example, we will choose "Join with video".
-
STEP 3: Next you will be prompted to test your speakers/headphones. You will see a window asking "Do you hear a ringtone?" - click on "Yes" if you do.
-
If you do not hear anything, try choosing different speakers from the pop-up menu next to "Speaker 1" or adjusting the volume (to do this, click on the small speaker symbol in the bottom panel of your computer screen - circled with blue in the example picture). If you are using headphones, make sure they are properly connected. When you can hear the ringtone, click on "Yes".
-
STEP 4: Next you will be prompted to test your microphone. You will see a small window saying "Speak and pause, do you hear a replay?" - this will echo what you say into the microphone. If you can hear yourself speaking, click on "Yes".
-
If you do not hear anything, try choosing different microphones in the pop-up menu next to "Microphone 1". If you are using the microphone in your headphones, make sure your headphones are properly connected. If you still cannot find the problem, check that you do have a functioning microphone - most laptops will have an in-built microphone, but this is not always the case. If you do not have a microphone, you can buy an external microphone or headphones with an in-built microphone; however keep in mind that not all microphones/headsets are compatible with all computers, so it is best to ask someone to help you buy the correct microphone for your device if you are unsure.
-
STEP 5: When you confirm that you can hear the replay, you will see the window confirming that "Speaker and microphone looks good". Click on "Join with Computer Audio".
-
STEP 6: This will bring you to the next window asking you again to "Join with Computer Audio" - you will see it when you join Zoom meetings in the future, and can click on "Test Speaker and Microphone" to test them again if necessary. If you are satisfied with audio and do not want to confirm this again in the future, tick the box saying "Automatically join audio by computer when joining a meeting".
-
When ready, click on the blue button saying "Join with Computer Audio" and you will find yourself in the test meeting with you as the only participant. The interface looks like it will look during the real meeting, and you can take your time to explore different functions. Some basic components of the interface are explained below, as well as in the next section "Set up a meeting" under "Use of the different functions in the meeting". When you are ready to leave, simply click on the red button saying "Leave".

Browse the test meeting interface
In the test meeting you will see the bottom black bar with meeting functions, which will look the same in the real meeting. They are explained in the next section "Set up a meeting" under "Use of different functions in the meeting".
