The basics of Internet and all things digital -
designed to help you learn
The very basics that you need to use Zoom:
-
If you want to simply join a meeting:
-
Access to a computer, tablet or a mobile phone;
-
Access to the Internet (Wi-Fi or mobile data - Wi-Fi is preferable but you can use Zoom over the mobile data too)
-
This is optional, but we do recommend to register and install the Zoom app, so that the functionality and performance of the program are better.
-
Using Zoom to join a meeting is always free.
-
-
If you want to host a meeting:
-
In addition to the above, you have to have an email account in order to register for a Zoom account. You will have to register for the Zoom platform and activate the account using your email. You can do this using a computer/laptop, tablet or using your phone.
-
Depending on what meeting you would like to host, you might have to purchase a subscription. Zoom is free for unlimited one-on-one meetings, but for group meetings the free version only allows meetings of up to 100 participants and 40 minutes at a time; there are payment plans to host bigger meetings. If you are hosting a meeting on behalf of an organization, check whether they already have a Zoom subscription, or whether they are prepared to cover its cost.
-
Ways of accessing Zoom:
-
On your computer: via the free Zoom application or directly via your Internet browser. It will take you a few minutes longer to install the application, but its functionality tends to be better than directly accessing the meeting without installing it.
-
On your smartphone or tablet: via the free Zoom app.
We explore all of these options further in the tutorial.
