Is WhatsApp safe to use?
All messages sent via WhatsApp are encrypted, which means that your communication is protected. However for your experience to be completely safe, you have to follow basic Internet rules:
-
Never reply to people you don’t know and never click on anything in their messages.
-
Sometimes scammers pretend to be bank employees or other official figures. If you receive communication from what looks like an official company (e.g. bank, post office, etc.), remember that they CANNOT ask you via WhatsApp for money transfers or any personal details or bank details. In case of doubt contact the organization directly - for example, call them on their official phone number.
-
One problem in WhatsApp is spread of misinformation and “fake news”. Take care to double-check the information and news that are sent to you, especially if you forward it to your friends.
Privacy policy update - 15th of May 2021
WhatsApp is introducing a privacy policy update. The current deadline for accepting it is 15th of May 2021.
This move has caused some concern among WhatsApp users, especially relating to the possible sharing of information with WhatsApp's parent company, Facebook. WhatsApp states that the information that it shares with Facebook includes data such as the account phone number, mobile device information and IP address, transactions and information about interacting with businesses. However, WhatsApp claims that the privacy update will not affect the personal conversations with family and friends, and personal chats and calls will remain secure.
Users may choose not to accept the policy update; however, in this case they would only be able to use WhatsApp for a short time and with very limited functionality after the 15th of May.
